Đông Ba Market in Thừa Thiên – Hue

Đông Ba Market, located on the left bank of Hương River, in Phú Hòa Ward, Huế City, is about 300m far from Trường Tiền Bridge. The market was established in the early 19th century, initially located outside Đông Ba. In 1885, the capital Huế was invaded, the market was burned by French colonists. In 1899, in the reign of King Thành Thái, the market was rebuilt in the old place and moved to intersection between Hương river and Hàng Bè river (present location).

Prior to 1859 (French colonized Saigon), there was a small market on the banks of the Bến Nghé River, close to Saigon. In 1870, the market was burned with a small part. Forty years later (1911), the old market was demolished to create a new, enormous market and completed in 1914.
