Owned by the Cambodian government and Vietnam Airlines with all from Vietnam Airlines, Cambodia Angkor Air is the “oldest” running-airline offering domestic flights based at Angkor International Airport (REP) in Siem Reap in this beautiful, haunting and heart-breaking country. When it comes to safety standard, Cambodia Angkor Air, which is the airlines favored by government and embassy personnel, should be ranked the first position. On the Siem Reap-Phnom Penh route, they fly ATR72 turboprop planes, which are Italian-French planes thought to be much safer than the Chinese A60 turboprop planes that Bayon Airlines use. The total flight time is about 50 minutes and there is 20 kg baggage included in economy bookings. It is highly recommended to arrive an hour before boarding.

A joint venture between the Chinese government and the Naga casino company, Bassaka Air Airline owns two planes, A320-200 Airbuses that formerly belonged to Vietnam Airlines. The big planes of A320-200s can provide enough seats for 168 passengers, making a trip with it much shorter on than that on Bayon Air and Cambodia Angkor Air, both of which run this route in slower, smaller prop planes. It also means that travelers can actually bring luggage onto the flight, which is hard and even impossible in the smaller propeller planes without normal-sized overhead compartments.

The total flight time is about 45 minutes and there is 20 kg baggage included in economy bookings. There is one daily flight offered by Bassaka Air in either directions, and it is advised to arrive at least 45 minutes before boarding time. Compared to the previous route monopoly-holder Cambodia Angkor Air, tickets on Bassaka are ridiculously cheap with flights averaging less than $50 and starting at only $19 each way.

Bassaka Air schedule:

Siem Reap to Phnom Penh: daily flight starts at 10:55 AM. There are additional flights at 4:35 PM on Tuesdays and 7:55 AM on Fridays.

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap: daily flight starts at 9:20 AM. There are additional flights at 11:20 AM and 3 PM on Sundays.

Another new airline flying in Cambodia is Cambodia Bayon Airlines which is currently offering a daily flight from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, and one from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Starting at $32 each way, the prices are pretty cheap. However, the infamous Chinese MA60 – Modern Ark 60 propeller plane, which has been banned from flying in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and UK, is what Cambodia Bayon Airlines is flying. Due to safety issues, countries such as Indonesia, Nepal and Tonga, have recently either banned or gotten rid of the MA60. On the other hand, presumably as no one else would take them, Cambodia Bayon Airlines, has 19 more on order.

It takes about 50 minutes to fly with Cambodia Bayon Airlines and also, 20 kg baggage is included in economy bookings.
