How to travel from Hanoi to Cuc Phuong national park

Cuc Phuong national park belongs to Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Hoa Binh provinces. It was officially established on July 7th 1962, and has been a very popular travel destination for both Vietnamese and foreign nature lovers. There are several different ways to travel from Hanoi to Cuc Phuong national park. Either motorbike or bus/car can be used as your option.

The first route: via national highway Hanoi – Ninh Binh (national highway 1A). The total distance is about 130 km. If you go by bus or car, it will take approximately 3 and half hours to reach your destination.

The second route: via Ho Chi Minh Highway or national highway 21. The total distance is about the same as the first route, which mean roughly the same travelling time can be applied.

The third route: using buses at Giap Bat bus station (labeled Nho Quan – Me). This bus will take you to Nho Quan station, from where you can take a direct bus to Cuc Phuong national park that is about 10 km away. The cost ranges from 80.000 dong to 100.000 dong.

When to go and what to do at Cuc Phuong national park

The dry season from December to April is the most suitable time to begin your trip from Hanoi to Cuc Phuong national park. The weather is these months are cool and comfortable. Visiting Cuc Phuong during the other months of the year is totally possible, but not recommended because rain makes the road slippery, and there are risk of sickness due to a large number of mosquitos and leeches in the forest. Since there are many trails that cut through the forest, hiking is on our list of outdoor activities. If you decide to take a simple 2 to 3 hour-trek, there are loop trails available. If you are more adventurous and stay here for more than a day, trekking through the park can take up to 2 full days. Camping is available and info can be accessed at the park headquarters. Or you can choose homestay with the Muong village in the forest if doing the long trek.

There are some safety notes that need to be taken seriously:

  • Wear long sleeves and pants, because there are vines, mosquitos and leeches. Bring your best pair of shoes.
  • If you are not good with directions, hire a tour guide at the cost from 20 dollars to 35 dollars – depends on the length of your trek).
  • Bring enough water. You can bring your own and/or stock up at the shop or restaurant on the way.
