Fansipan is the highest mountain of Vietnam and it is the highest mountain of Indochina so Fansipan is regarded as the rooftop of Indochina. Fansipan belongs to Hoang Lien Son Mountain. It is far from Sapa town about 9 kilometers to the Southwest. It is located between Lao Cai and Lai Chau province. In local language, Fansipan named “Hua Xi Pan”; “Hua Xi Pan” means “wanderous giant rock”.

 The best time to climb Fansipan is from the end of September to April the next year. In October and November, the weather is cool, it is partly sunny and the weather is not so cold. However, tourists need to know that the weather in Sapa is quite extraordinary. May be when you are in the half way up to mountain, it is sunny but when you climb a little further, you’ll feel like getting lost between clouds and drizzle. If you are lucky, you can have the chance of seeing amazing natural phenomena like double rainbow phenomena. So if you just travel to Sapa with the aim of conquering Fansipan, you should go in October and November. If you would like to combine between travelling and discovering other natural beauty of Sapa, you should travel to Sapa from the end of September to next April.

What do tourists need to prepare for conquering Fansipan journey?

Nobody conquers Fansipan without tools for climbing mountain. So what are tools that need for climbing Fansipan Mountain?

* Should visitor climb Fansipan alone?

The answer is no. Climbing to Fansipan is really adventurous so tourists should not go to Sapa and climb Fansipan alone. In case of getting any difficulty or trouble of health, you will have your companions to help you when necessary. Moreover, climbing Fansipan with other companions, you will get much motivation to conquer this majestic mountain. You’d better go into a group of five to ten people.

*Tourists need to have a good health and morale before the journey.

This is important thing not only in climbing Fansipan but also joining in any trip else. In order to have a good health before conquering the rooftop of Indochina about 1 week or two week in advanced, tourists should spend from 30 minutes to 60 minutes walking and running or climbing artificial mountain. Besides physical training, tourists also need to train yourselves in order to have a strong will and determination because climbing Fansipan will make you extremely tired, if you don’t have a steel-mind, you will certainly give up climbing this majestic mountain soon. * What do tourists need to bring when climbing Fansipan?

There are many things that are all important to you when climbing Fansipan; however, you just need to remember things below:

– Backpack: you should choose medium backpack that can contain from 3 to 4.5 kilograms. Your backpack need to have straps in order to fix backpack into your chest and your bell. This will help you moving easily.

-Shoes: you should choose trekking shoes or you can choose a pair of sport shoes with thick and soft soles; the neck of shoes should be high to your ankles. Your trekking shoes need to be good friction, road holding, waterproof and sweat adsorbent. Especially, yours shoes must be fit your feet to avoid hurt your feet when climbing the mountain.

-Socks: you should bring 3 or 4 pair of socks and all of them should be high neck socks so that your feet will be warm and won’t be hurt due to rubbing the shoes.

– Gloves: Most of the roads lead to Fansipan are passes; you even have to climb the cliff so you should protect your hands by wearing gloves.

– Clothes: If conquering Fansipan in March and April, you should bring light and airy clothes; moreover, your clothes should absorb sweat. Besides summer clothes, you also need to bring a coat in case of changing weather suddenly. If you climb Fansipan in October to December, you should warm clothes, bring more sweaters and thick jackets.

-Stick to climb the mountain: it is necessary for you to bring sticks. Sticks will be your fulcrum when you are tired. You should buy trekking sticks before you start your trekking.

-Other necessary things: insect repellent, phone, changes, camera, raincoat, wide brimmed hats, multipurpose  folding knives, lighters, flashlights, ropes, medicine, high-calorie snacks, notebooks. If travelling Sapa by yourselves and not going with tourism agent, you need to bring sleeping bed and tent to have good nights on mountain.

* Firstly, tourists should hire a local guide. Local guide is fluent in roads to Fansipan. Moreover, they can help you to bring luggage and deal with emergency situations on the way. It is so important to hire a local guide during the trip to Fansipan peak, you should remember this.

* Secondly, tourists should not separate from group to climb mountain alone. There have had many cases that tourists lost the way or missing due to separating from group or bad health so they were neglected behind.

* What should you do when you lose the way? Let you return to the way that you had started. In the case that you can’t be able to identify the direction, you should stand there and wait for people to find out you. There is a great experience for you when climbing Fansipan is that you should bring ribbons to remark the place you went through so that you can avoid losing the way; on the other hand, rescue team can find you easily.

* You should note dangerous roads: Surely that you will get dangerous roads to get Fansipan peak like the steep roads, slippery roads, rough rocky streams or unsteady paths; you need to be calm down, move carefully, place your feet firmly and cling both hands onto the rock. Especially, you should move up in the shape of Z, stooping when moving down, bending your knees and estimate the ruggedness of things that you will cling to.

* Lastly, don’t forget to bring necessary things follow you such as your phone, backup charger and things mentioned above in section 2.
