Located in both Yen Binh and Yen Yen districts in Yen Bai province, Thac Ba Lake was formed when local people dammed the Chay River up to build the first Thac Ba hydroelectric plant in the North. Thac Ba Lack is one of the three largest artificial lakes in Vietnam and it covers more than 1,300 large and small islands. The lake has the area of 23,400ha and the length of 80km. In addition to the Chay River- the main water supply for Thac Ba Lake, some huge rivers such as Ngoi Hanh or Ngoi Cat also provide alluvium to this lake which is a favourable condition to create the variety of the flora and fauna development.
