Chiang Mai, which is much less crowded and quite a bit cheaper than Bangkok, is also booming with creative people and expats living cheaply while working.

Also, Hanoi street food is top-notch, particularly when you are sitting amongst locals at one of so many plastic-chair coffee shops throughout this capital. Sticking with Bia Hoi, the world’s cheapest beer to keep costs even lower. As hostel beds and private rooms are cheap, don’t automatically book a bunk!

Although modern development is starting to creep in, Laos’ capital city is so low key that it feels like a small-town river resort. However, its strategic location has helped it to develop as a large tourist infrastructure and a fascinating stop for sure. Lining up along the river are the happy-hour beers at the pleasant restaurant and the main attractions are all quite cheap.

Mostly due to its fast-growing popularity, prices for many things in Luang Prabang have recently gone up more than in just about any other tourist city, but for now for those who travel like a backpacker, it is still very cheap. The ice-cold Beerlao can be found at the same low price at almost every restaurant in the city and the local attractions are all practically free. As in Luang Prabang, hotel prices are relatively high, for the majority of travelers it could be farther down this list.
